Heart Murmurs and pregnancy
Hi, I have a heart murmur, whihc i have been told may become a problem with my pregnancy, due to carrying the excess weight, and everything getting squashed up near the end.
I am currently in my 12th week, so at the momet I'm learning how to deal with it myself, it looks as if I will be put under shared care, rather than just midwife led, and proably referred to cardiology, but I'll keep this thread updated.
I'd love to hear if anyone is in a similar situation xx

Hi Michelle,
Sorry to hear this but the extra care you get from the hospital tends to be really good and if there is any problems they will have you sorted out in no time. Just rest as much as you can and learn how to create extra space in your tum in the third trimester - sitting with my arms above my head always works!

Re: Heart Murmurs and pregnancy
Time for a little update. I've been to see the obstetrician today, she refers me to cardiology and they do an Echo (Heart ultrasound) to see how things are, and this will enable them to make a decision as to whether I need antibiotics during labour ( I have to have these whenever I have dental treatment). From what I can gather, they will also at some stage (not sure yet when) check Biggles doesn't have a hole which will be good to know. If he/she does, then it tends to just be a case of annual visits for echo's to make sure the hole doesn't grow, up until aged 10 or so-I didn't get this because they just didn't do it then. Unless of course Biggles needs surgery if s/he does have a hole but at least we will know this before and have time to get prepared. I will keep this updated, hopefully it will help someone else.

Had my Echo today, they wil send a report to the obstetrition, but feel its all OK, some slight regurge from one valve, which may indicate antibiotics during deliver, but I don't mind that, better safe than sorry.
