Re: Food - what to avoid??
I know that due to the risk of listeria you should avoid:
* Soft and blue-veined cheeses,
* Pâté
* Potato salad and coleslaw (and other prepared salads)
* Ready-prepared meals or re-heated food (unless they are piping hot all the way through ie not cold in the centre)
Risk of Salmonella:
* Avoid food containing raw or partially cooked eggs (only egg with solid white/yolk are ok)
* Unpasteurised dairy products.
* Cook all meat and poultry thoroughly making sure there is no pink meat showing
Toxoplasmosis
* unwashed raw fruit and vegetables,
* raw or undercooked meat
* unpasteurised goat's milk or goat's cheese.
They also suggest to wash your hands after preparing raw meat, to avoid vitamin A (found in liver), reduce the amount of oily fish you eat and avoid uncooked shellfish completely.
I think thats it but just incase: Food Standards Agency
Oh and we all know about alcohol and not to drink too much caffeine
Hope this helps

Re: Food - what to avoid??
Oh and Iv just remembered (from my training!! go me) not to drink too much Tea as the tannin stops the absorption of iron in the body. As anaemia is common in pregnancy you need your iron! lol

Also, limit the amount of tuna you eat (think it's no more than two small tins a week) and avoid fish such as shark & marlin - all to do with increased levels of mercury found in these fish.

Re: Food - what to avoid??
I was told to avoid fizzy drinks like cola and so on. I love Diet Coke but couldn't stand the taste of it until very recently and even then I can only ever manage a small glass of it. It's all to do with the caffeine so things like red bull are out too.
If you feel as rotten as I did for the first 20 weeks then the only drinks you can handle are milk and water!

Re: Food - what to avoid??
I had the same with my midwife at the beginning. I was never given any information, but then received a large pack of stuff at my 12 week scan, by then I could have been eating the wrong stuff for all that time. I have never been given a number either for my midwife, just sort of left to get on with it!

I have only just been given my notes and contact details when I met the midwife yesterday. I could have done with it earlier when I was getting strange pains (that turned out to be constipation!!) but its all so new that I didn't know if it was normal or not.

Does anyone know when you can start eating the banned foods? Are they still harmful if you breastfeed?

Re: Food - what to avoid??
I asked the midwife, and she said that you can re-introduce them, but just don't go mad:- so don't live on pate for a week etc. She did say they still recommend avoiding nuts, but I'll ask again when I say my proper midwife, as i only saw a locum one today, and keep the thread updated

Re: Food - what to avoid??
OK, I've got some more info, if breast feeding, the fish things still stand, so no Shark, Marlon etc, and keep tuna limited, because of transferring mercury, and alo keep off the nuts
